Travelling to exotic lands is exciting, yet upon reflection, some of my fondest memories are not of the locales, but rather the locals, more specifically the guides who have shared their time and expertise with us over the years. Guides add a rich flavor to any trip that cannot be tasted on your own. They tell stories you will never read about in travel books; Most are true, a few are stretched myths and legends passed down. They point out wildlife in lush forests that you would certainly miss, and they are true ambassadors who proudly define their land and people with an endearing spirit.
Marie Alexandra (Alex) is one of our favorite guides in Ecuador. “These are the best biscuits you will ever eat” she will say as you enter the home/cottage industry of a family in Cayambe. “And it takes two days to make them.” “Try this” as she plucks a red fruit from a tree at Hacienda Cuisin. “It’s called a tree tomato, and we use it in all our ahis (salsas).” “And, look over there, a condor.” She will show you a pristine hidden waterfall surrounded by unspoiled primary rainforest and spot a toucan or macaw or pick a nut from a certain palm tree and explain how it can be peeled and carved. “We call it vegetable ivory” “Isn’t this paradise,” she would say. “We must protect it…..we must.” “And by the way, tonight we’ll try some cuy (guinea pig) for dinner.” No thanks!
Every guide is as individual and unique as their country, but they are all bonded by a universal code of love for the environment, love of life and an enthusiasm to share both with you. And in doing so, they will touch you in a profound way.
One of the things we’ll never forget about our trip to Belize that you and your folks so graciously and meticulously put together for us was the guide who took us bird watching up at Chaa Creek. His name was Mashek and we still imitate his enthusiasm and wonderful accent pointing out Toucans flying above us, Wipper Willow Yellow Tails, and The Gnarly Brown and Red Feather (these are not the real names of bird of course because I can’t remember all of the wonderful exotic names after 6 years. The point is it’s the amazing talented people who took us birding, caves and the like that we remember vividly. That was an amazing trip that will be remembered for a lifetime. Thank you!!!
